Nogizaka46 (乃木坂46, Nogizaka Forty-six) is a Japanese female idol group produced by Yasushi Akimoto, created as the official rival (公式ライバルkōshiki raibaru) of the group AKB48.[1] They are the first group from the Sakamichi Series, which also includes sister groups Keyakizaka46,[2]Yoshimotozaka46, and Hinatazaka46. The group was named after the location of the Sony Music Japan offices near Nogizaka Station.[1] Nogizaka46 has twice won the Grand Prix at the annual Japan Record Awards. As of early 2019, the group has sold nearly 18 million CDs in Japan.[citation needed]

History[edit]

2011[edit]

The formation of Nogizaka46 was first announced on June 29, 2011, when it became the first group to be labelled as the 'official rival' to the group AKB48.[1] This is unlike other groups related to AKB48, like NMB48 and SKE48, because these groups are created as AKB48's sister groups.[1] Their producer Yasushi Akimoto also said that the number '46' was chosen as a direct challenge to AKB48.[1] 'Nogizaka46' also carries the meaning that 'even with fewer members than AKB48, we won’t lose'.[1] To differentiate the group from the 48 groups, the image of Nogizaka46 is based on the Japanese people's perception of a private all-girls high school student in France, which carries the connotations of 'elegant and refined'.[3]

The final auditions for the group was held over the weekend of 20–21 August, where 56 finalist competed for the 36 available places.[4] Overall, 38,934 people applied to join their auditions.[4] The list of the 36 selected members was announced on 22 August.[4] In a surprise announcement, it was also announced that another 16 girls would be joining the group as a provisional “senbatsu” member.[4]

Nogizaka46 have their own variety show on television, hosted by the comedian duo Bananaman, which started to air on October 2, 2011.[4][5] This variety show is entitled Nogizakatte, Doko? (乃木坂って、どこ?Lit: Where is Nogizaka?), and is aired on the main television stations in the TX network; mainly TV Tokyo, TV Osaka, TV Aichi, TV Setouchi, TV Hokkaido, and TVQ Kyushu Hoso.[5]

2012[edit]

On February 22, Nogizaka46 made their debut with the single Guruguru Curtain. It ranked second on the Oricon chart and sold 136,309 copies in the first week.[6] Their second single, Oide Shampoo, was released on May 2, and became their first number one song on the Oricon weekly chart, with sales of 156,000 copies.[7] On June 25, Nogizaka46 took part in Yubi Matsuri, an idol festival produced by Rino Sashihara. The concert was held at Nippon Budokan before a crowd of 8,000 people and featured such girl groups as Idoling!!!, Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku, Super Girls, Tokyo Girls' Style, Passpo, Buono!, Momoiro Clover Z, and Watarirouka Hashiritai 7.[8][9] From September 1 to September 9, the group performed their first musical 16 nin no Principal at Shibuya Parco Theater.[10] In December, Nogizaka46 reached number one on the Oricon yearly chart in newcomers sales category, with annual sales of 870 million yen.[11]

This program is entitled Nogizaka46no, No (乃木坂46の「の」Lit: Nogizaka46's No) and produced by Nippon Cultural Broadcasting.[13] From December 2012 to April 2013, the audition for the 2nd generation took place. Out of 16,302 applicants, 14 were chosen[14] and 13 were introduced at the 16 nin no Principal deux, the sequel to the 2012 musical, performed at Akasaka ACT Theater from May 3 to May 12.[15] On October 22, Nogizaka46 released their first photobook Nogizaka Ha.[16] It ranked fourth on the Oricon weekly book ranking with 27,000 copies sold.[17] On the final leg of their national tour 「真夏の全国ツアー2013 FINAL!」 Nogizaka46 announced their upcoming concert at the famed Tokyo Nippon Budokan which will take place on December 20.[18]

2016[edit]

In this year, the 4th Year Birthday Live was postponed until August 28, the final three days of the Summer National Tour 2016,[33] due to a lack of concert halls caused by the reconstruction boom for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.[34] From February 20 through February 22, Nogizaka46 broadcast their Internet TV program Nogizaka46 4th Anniversary Nogizaka 46 hours TV on six websites simultaneously.[35] On February 27, their 12th single Taiyō Nokku was selected for the 30th Japan Gold Disc Award for the best five singles.[36]

It sold 41,000 copies in the first week and ranked 1st on Oricon weekly book ranking.[17]

From July 19 to September 4, the 3rd generation audition took place.[14] In the final stage of the audition, 13 candidates appealed to internet audiences through the streaming service called SHOWROOM.[41] On September 4, it was announced that 12 candidates passed the final screening and one declined. They were chosen from 48,986 applicants that were the largest number of applicants ever.[42][43] On November 9, Nogizaka46 released the 16th single Sayonara no Imi. It reached number one on the Oricon weekly single chart, selling 827,717 copies in the first week[44] and it was the group's first Million single certified by RIAJ.[45] On December 31, Nogizaka46 made their second appearance on NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen and sang Sayonara no Imi.[46]

2017[edit]

From February 20 to 22, Nogizaka46 performed their 5th Year Birthday Live concert series over 3 days at Saitama Super Arena.[47] The first day of which would mark Nanami Hashimoto's final day as a member of Nogizaka46 and her retirement from the entertainment industry.[48] On March 22, their 17th single Influencer was released. From May 20 to June 11, members performed in a stage production based on the manga series Asahinagu. The play was performed in Tokyo, Osaka and Aichi.[49] On May 24, they released their third album Umarete kara Hajimete Mita Yume.[50] From July 1 to October 9, they embarked on their Midsummer National Tour performing in Tokyo, Sendai, Osaka, Nagoya and Nigata.[51]

On August 9, their 18th single Nigemizu was released. On September 22, Nogizaka46's first feature film Asahinagu opened in cinemas across Japan.[52] On October 11, the theme song for the movie and stage play Itsuka Dekiru kara Kyou Dekiru was released as their 19th single featuring the respective casts of both productions. On November 7 and 8, they concluded their Midsummer National Tour at Tokyo Dome where they drew in over 55,000 fans each day, their largest crowds to date.[53][54] On November 24, they performed overseas for the second time at C3AFA Singapore.[55] This would be their first step towards advancing into Asia and, for the first time since the groups inception, saw them lifting the region restrictions on their YouTube channel to make it available to all countries in which the YouTube Red service had not launched.

On December 30, Nogizaka46 won the grand prize at the 59th Japan Record Awards for their song Influencer.[56] On December 31, they made their third consecutive appearance on NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen performing Influencer.[57]

2018[edit]

From July 6 to September 2, Midsummer National Tour 2018 was held, including their 7th Year Birthday Live concert from July 6 to 8.[58] On December 1, their first overseas solo concert was held at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai.[59] At the 60th Japan Record Awards, Nogizaka46 won the main Japan Record Award for their 20th single 'Synchronicity', marking their second consecutive Japan Record Award win.[60]

2019[edit]

On January 27, their second overseas solo concert was held at Taipei Arena in Taipei.[61] A fourth album was announced during the second day of the 7th Year Birthday Live, scheduled to be released on April 17th.[62] The final day of the 7th Birthday Live was a graduation concert for first generation member Nanase Nishino.[63] In March, Misa Etō held a solo concert as her final public appearance with the group,[64] and two other members announced their pending graduations: first generation member Yūri Saitō[65] and second generation member Karin Itō.[66]

Controversies[edit]

In April 2012, the choreography for Nogizaka46's second single, 'Oide Shampoo', was the subject of criticism.[67] When the music video for the song was published on YouTube, it became a hot topic on the Internet, receiving negative response from many viewers. As part of choreography, the girls lift their skirts over their faces, fully exposing their petticoats. Some commenters found the video obscene and stated that they felt uncomfortable watching it.[68] Some also found that the dance was sexually suggestive.[68]
