The second Dune game was spectacular for that period. The game was not the first real-time strategy, but introduced features that were soon to be followed by many other companies, for lots and lots of years. Games like Warcraft and Starcraft feature elements seen in Dune II for the first time. Complexity and innovation are the two words to describe Dune II. The world map was something new, the technology tree was never heard of before and the mobile units could have been deployed as buildings. Dune II is one of the games I will always cherish and never forget, I lost hours and days in row to build the dynasty of Emperor Frederick IV.

Although most of the game is action, there's a sufficient amount of strategy too. There's some resource management, and also some battle tactics. For instance, the best way to take out an enemy base is to make a bunch of units, send them over to take out the defending enemy baddies, all the while making new vehicles. Once all of the defenders are gone, send in the newer troops to help the old ones destroy the enemy's Construction Yard. From there, they can't rebuild any of their structures, so you can pretty much go on to destroy their vehicle plants or whatever. You can even destroy the enemy Harvesters, if you wish to stop their spice income.
The visuals are just fine..they're of a good size, so you won't lose them. Most of the scenery is just desert and rock, and while it gets a bit old after awhile, it isn't really that bad. There are really only five music tracks that play during the game, but they're all excellent. And the voices that were kept in sound great.
Dune II: The Battle for Arrakisis a thinking warrior's game. That means you need more than firepower and quick reflexes. Economics are important. So are defensive structures and troops. And all that ain't worth a dime if you can't back it up with brilliant strategy. You play as one of three houses: the Atreides, the Ordos, or the Harkon-nen. You're trying to squelch the other two by constructing a base, mining for spice, and producing infantry and weaponry. Each house holds a particular advantage and requires a different strategy to win.

The controls in Dune are fluid. You pick your force, and then click on the enemy you wish to attack. Battles are fought in real time, too.

- Build a Space Port as soon as possible, and start buying weapons at premium rates.
- If this oversize, fish bait becomes a pest, shoot it. You won't destroy it, but you can at least drive it away.
- As soon as you get an Outpost up and running, send out a scout vehicle to explore the region for both enemy units and Spice.
- In your first two campaigns, you only need to earn a specific number of credits. You must erect just one Power Plant, one Spice Refinery, one Spice Silo, and one Outpost. The less you build, the quicker you'll reach your credit target.
- Before entering an enemy compound, be sure to take out any gun or rocket turrets.
Cool Sights and Hot Sounds
The sound effects and music in Dune are outstanding. The tunes set the mood for the various campaigns, plus distinct sound effects and digitized speech add character to the game.
Visually, Dune is no stunner, but you can easily recognize every unit and building. The one thing that dampens the fun is slowdown when multiple units move on the screen together.
